There’s a wind, blustery at times, flush on my face from the north, so perhaps I’ll walk up on a deer, though I’m not hunting. The wind is checked here and there by brush as I walk along the fenceline. In the field 30 feet away the wind has free rein on this cool and clearing October day.

I’m taking a hike to feel autumnal nostalgia drifting along the fenceline, a transition strip of brush, trees and tall grass on either side of what’s left of a fence. This is the edge, where ruffed grouse and pheasants hide, where foxes and coyotes cruise for those very birds, where deer pause before stepping into the open field, where farmers working the field once paused in the shade.
